What exactly is CID font encoding?

Paul Cutler0 votes

I have run into problems with newpapers saying they couldn't run something due to composite text. After some research, it turns our what they are talking about is CID font encoding in a PDF. ID CS would encode almost everything this way, it seems to be "fixed" in CS2. My understanding is that CID font encoding is the way that Adobe dealt with the larger character set in Open Type. Is this correct?

I've been meaning to write a blog piece about "what are CID fonts and what are they doing in my PDF?" I recently wrote a lot about this in a post to the InDesign list on BlueWorld.com, and in correcting a Knowledgebase article for Enfocus Pitstop....

I'll get cracking on that.

Thomas - I have been told that ID CS2 will CID font encode when exporting a PDF under certain circumstances. If you could clarify this (is it true and what circumstances trigger the CID encoding) that would be really helpful for my workflow.
thanks
