If you were to found a heavy metal band that would play exclusively for type designers, what would you call it? I’m looking for something more interesting than “The Fläming Säns”

Accented letters would be good, but not necessary. However, fake umlauts are a must! The logo will be set in blackletter, of course.

unknown

Well, isn’t UMLAUT a natural choice? And of course you would have to put umlauts over both of the U’s. Like this: ÜMLAÜT ROCKS!

unknown

Isn’t there alreaday a nü-metal band called “revenge of the umlaut” (without any umlauted-characters in their name, specifically) already?

Somehow “The Ümläut” doesn’t sound evil enough.

Hellvetica, naturally…

Yeah, that’s the best, and fitting revenge on that face (sorry Chester). My favourite tho is Hrant and the Masters of the Univers, for sentimental reasons, and because typophiles would find it funny ;^)

Höt Mëtäl is an obvious one.

What kind of heavy metal are we talking about? (believe me, it matters)

I think something simple is better. If youre doing something heavy, dark, or aggressive I’d go with FRAKTUR. If it’s something more epic, I’d calling ARRIGHI - the first concept album could be called La Operina.

And just to sound like a total nerd…
There was already a band named umlaut back in the 90’s. They were part of that crust punk crimethinc crowd and, if I remember correctly, were a joke started to make fun of other crusty metal bands. I believe they only made a 7” that was distributed with the old crimethinc magazine. I also think they parodied the motorhead logo a few times.

FRÄKTÜR!!!

I vote for this one, but maybe the R’s need umlauts too.

Okay, so that implies a different genre of music, but I think the joke of leaving out the umlaut in Einstürzende, where it actually belongs, makes it worthwhile.

Chris Lead Balloon was already done, Lead Zeppelin. “and she’s buying a stairway to heaven” (I hated that song)

unknown

Dan, you shouldn’t reveal things like disliking a song that to many people signifies wonderful memories.

unknown

Tiff, you’re a Led-head?!
Page or Plant?

unknown

Why not Tiff my reason isn’t about the song its about how it was played on the radio stations. They killed it. It was played every couple of minutes I got to hate it and to this day won’t listen to it. This is what makes the world go round we don’t agree on everything or on most things.

unknown

Page, but there wouldn’t be Led Zeppelin with all four. Plant’s voice is a perfect partner for Page’s guitar. I’ve always had a weak spot for musician’s, but particularly guitar players.

unknown

Dan, ok I understand that. Yes, radio station’s have ruined many a song. I only listen to the radio now when I’m in my car, and even then it is down low and background noise. I’m sorry they did that for you. I was just teasing you anyway.

> …a heavy metal band that would play exclusively for type designers…

Sorry… uh… wait a second… Talk about niche marketing yourself. Are there a disproportionate number of heavy metal fans who are type designers? Or a disproportionate number of type designers who are heavy metal fans..?

Perhaps there are unique products that could be pitched to this select demographic! Do give us some further information about your project, Dan!
