(x) digital equivalent for Baltimore Type lead type “Graphic Medium" - Belucian/Lucian {Patricia}

Abigail Uhteg

Does anyone know if there’s another name for what Baltimore Type called “Graphic Medium”? I have this (lead) type and can’t find information on it anywhere. I know Balto Type had a nasty habit of making up its own names, so thought that might be the case here.

Thank you!

Hmmm, yes... Bitstream also has a digital version called Lucian.

But both digital versions are based on Lucian Bernhard’s design.
That would mean Baltimore Type also based their “Graphic Medium” off the metal version of Bernhard’s design.

A note on David Berlow’s Belucian:
In need of a distinctive display style, Smart magazine asked Font Bureau in 1990 to revise the work of Lucian Bernhard from 1925. David Berlow prepared Belucian Demi, now accompanied by Kelly Ehrgott-Milligan’s 1994 Demi Italic, added Book and Book Italic for text, and designed Ultra for dynamic impact in headlines.

Thanks, Norbert. It was Lucian when I was growing up and somehow had morphed into Belucian in the digital age.

ta nada!
FYI — last night, purely by accident, I came across Lucian in an old VGC film font catalog.

You would think we had better stuff to browse through than old type books :-)

Huh!? Like what!? Where? Why didn’t anyone tell me?

It’s a filthy lie. Ther’s nothing better to browse through than old type books.

Abigail, if you were really browsing thru old type books in your spare time you’d have found this font on your own - it was pretty common.
