I have looked everywhere for the name of the font GM used on the Special Edition Trans Ams from 1976 to 1981. Does anyone have a clue?

As usual, this car badge would seem to be a custom creation. Still, Peter's suggestion of Element is the closest I know of. Check out Gerhard Helzel's digitization of Element Fett (Mar Bitroff, 1933), five font samples down.
Herr Helzel is one person who has digitized an incredible number of fonts as one of his interests. He's not a foundry. As such, his website is kind of bare bones. He does, however, show you every capital letter Element through V of - making it clear that it is quite close.
If anyone cares, here is an old example of Element in use.
Oh, and that should have read Max Bittrof. I butchered his name above.
