(x) Art Deco face in "The Barrymore Awards" logo - Casablanca RR {Norbert}

Chris Rugen

I've got to redraw a logo (attached), the vector art for which is lost or never existed, and it's not worth my time to redraw the type.

I did my usual battery of research on this one, but I'm sure it's something so obvious I just went right past it. It's also possible it was a bundled font. I've checked out Carlos, Newport Land, Romeo, and Casablanca. I've scrolled through 975 fonts on My Fonts after searching 'art deco condensed'. It's definitely coming from the same inspirational source as the others: Carlos Winkow's Electra from around 1940 (according to Font Bureau). However, every time I get close, some aspect is off. Few are condensed enough or thick enough. I wonder whether it's been modified by the previous designer, but I can't tell either way.

So, I turn to all of you.

Yup. He's old, but he's still got a keen eye for type. ;-)

Say Norbert, considering you're back, where were you ever gone from? ;-)

I left the Typographic world in '94 and warped over to multimedia and web publishing. At that time things that moved interested me more than things that remained stagnant.

The only thing that inspired me to jump back into type lore was many comments by young designers I started to see on the web.

I've been using Univers a bit recently. It's kind of a relaxed Frutiger... or something

That's it! Thanks so much.

Don't know how I missed that, but that's what extra sets of eyes and minds are for, I guess.

Chris,

I noticed on a few font sites that when you do a search by name or category, it doesn't always display the weight variants.

On dafont.com there is a check box for "show variants". That's how I spoted the condensed versions of Casablanca.

Thanks for the tip, Norbert!
