Ancient Rome

schmitt

What fonts are recommended to use for the times of ancient Rome -- maybe, Rusticana?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

'Trajan'.. :)

( Sorry.. I.. Just.. Had.. To.. :)

Thanks for the recommendations. They're both good looking fonts.

Imperial or Republican? Inscriptional or hand-written?

Si

I haven't decided yet. I'm going to use the font on the cover of a pocket guide. Possibly inscriptional, but not hand-written.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks tiffany. So far, I really like the Trajan and FTF Garda Titling fonts for my pocket guide. The other ones also look good.

another option...

Palatino caps of course.

Funnily enough, you can see (inscriptions which are the basis for) Trajan in the Foro Romano, and up the hill in the Palatino where the Emperors lived...

Nick Cooke

Just a note.: My 'Trajan' remark was ment to be sarcastic.. Hmm..

( But, I love 'Garda', particularly 'Number Two', and I may recommend it as well.. )

I know it was, but I forgot about the Trajan font. Thanks.

Thanks oldnick and fontboye_uk. Those are more good options to consider.

Take a look at Sophia from Font Bureau

Thanks everyone for your help. Now, I have some fonts to choose from.

Thanks dan. That's a great looking font.

Capitolium NB: PDF link

Note that Capitolium evokes renaissance Rome a little more than classical Rome, but is less obvious and so fresher than some of the other suggestions.

Dan, Sophia is Byzantine.

Capitolium has a sweet Euro symbol!

Thanks John, hrant and dan_reynolds. I never expected all this help and good suggestions. I appreciate it.

Is the pocket guide a guide to ancient Rome or modern Rome? Perhaps it would be less cliched to go with a more modern Italian font, perhaps the ones Vespa, Lavazza and Bialetti use?

Another reason to avoid Trajan... http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/jul/05/ku_announces_new_logo/?breaking

Si

No, the pocket guide will be used at work. I'm not sure which font to use, but I'll probably use an inscriptional font.

Oh my, some comments on that thread

Hrant I know that but its a great flexible face and I bet 9 out of 10 average users of his guide wouldn't know the difference. I was thinking end user

Um...Dan (Reynolds), are you posting on the right thread?

Yes, that was a comment taken from the Link that Si had posted. Great article. Or, I should say, the (student?) readers have posted great comments to the article. Check it out…

Sorry for the confusion.

Today I walked into school and saw the new yearbook/annual report. Titles are set in Trajan. How funny, I thought…

Alessandro read my mind. However, the setting on that page doesn't do the typefaces justice at all.

Ciao, I am in Philadelphia, maybe we will meet at Parsons School.

Less ancient and more ancient revival, is Font Bureau's Mantinia. Caps only, tho'. I'm a sucker for this one (as long as it isn't abused).
