hello

im one of the guys producing the first swiss art pdf magazine, artstübli.

we released number one and are working on number two, which will have illustration as a main subject. number three will probably be about typography, so im looking for some help from you: if you think of switzerland, who do you think of? weingart (born in germany..)? frutiger (well known)? im looking for "fresh heads", if you know some..

thanks!

Steph Geisbuller, Emil Ruder, Josef Muller Brockmann, Willi Kunz, April Greiman, Karl Gerstner, Fred Troller . . .

Favorites include Laurenz Brunner, Mika Mischler, Gilles Gavillet, David Rust.

I think of Max Caflisch. There's also André Baldinger, Markus Ernst, Ch. Bircher, Daniel Lanz, Edouard Hoffmann. A lot of swiss typographers are featured on www.fontnest.net.

Everyone that Chris L said for sure, and in addition to that since graphic designers are being mentioned, Armin Hofmann, Niklaus Troxler, and although I am not a big fan, Büro Destruct.

Andre Gurtler, Josef Muller Brockman and Frutiguer... mainly in my limited knowledge of the topic.

Héctor

Most I would have named, have already been mentioned..
But, Bruno Maag, Sibylle Hagmann or Fidel Peugeot, maybe.?

( Just to add some links to those names.: amb+, BD TypeDifferent, Grotesk, Kombinat, Lineto, Norm, Optimo.. )

thanks alot. i knew most of these guys, but there are also some new ones.

if everything works out we'll have an interview with Norm in the next issue (2), but that will not but limited to their typography..

I'm a bit late here but, it makes me think of BD and Type Different too.

Isn't April Greiman an American? Didn't she go to school at CalArts?

Yes as far as I know April Greiman is American. I think she may have just studied in Switzerland at the Schule für Gestaltung Basel (Basel School of Design) under Weingart. Though I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

Some of my favorites:

Cornel Windlin (Tate etc), Nico Schweizer (ID)

I could go on forever!

April Greiman is American and did some study under Weingart. He now, or at least did call her a type criminal(ist) when I studied in his class room.

Also interesting to see that at least two of the names mentioned, Laurenz Brunner and Markus Ernst, did a work practice at Dalton Maag before releasing their typographic work.

April Greiman is an American who also went to Basel in the early 70s where she met and married the late Dan Friedman (a classmate of mine at CMU). Her typography was very Basel influenced even though she was annointed with the "New Wave" label by the design press. When I took classes with Weigart in the mid eighties, he spoke of April fondly and referred to her as a "Painterly typgrapher" .
