Quador - a squarish serif

Arne Freytag0 votes

Hello,

I’m working on a serif text font, it has constructed elements of a slab serif, but also some of the Old Style genre.
The idea is, to design the typeface more squarish, with superelliptical shapes – to produce a strong horizontal impression and keep the counterspaces more open.
What do you think? Every comment is welcome.

Looking nice so far.

In your PDF, the bottom paragraph of sample text seems spaced more than the lines above – is that just an optical effect?
For some reason Acrobat shows spaces where I'd expect "fl" and "ffi" ligatures, such as in "advice from official bodies", though.

How nice to be in Typophile Critique again, giving help to people well above my ability.
The top part of /g is dark.
The lowercase /o gives the impression of being significantly squarer than everything else. Necessary differences make a text face, of course, but to carry it through I would at least suggest that the top of /a be a bit more flat and square somehow.

@Theunis: Thank you for comment – the text should only give an impression, spacing and kerning is not finished and ligatures are still missing …

@Cerulean: I corrected /g /o /a as you see in the second line.

I tried to give the legs of /K /R /k more esprit (fist line)

I like the general idea of it. Is this intended to be for text or display?
Also, with less pronounced serifs it might be a real nice font for terminals and programming…

Right, it is intended for text and I will think about your proposal. Maybe I do a second version with lower serifs later.

In the sample above I replaced the teardrops with rectangled terminals to go further with the idea of a squarish serif. What do you think?

I believe the /a needed its terminal as it was but I like the other changes. Perhaps /r would benefit from more experiments in either direction.

I agree thank you. Here is the first version of Upper- and Lowercase:

Nice font. He makes an impression

Thanks Solej

This is the first draft of the bold version. In the moment I don’t pay so much attention on the exact weight. More or less bolder can be adjusted later. But – what do you think about contrast and shapes?

Nice idea to give the legs of /K /R /k this “esprit” tail.

I’m now starting with the ExtraBold. Does that work for you?

Nice weight. Is the \g seems a bit to light? Same for the tail of the \y to my point of view. Also I would extend the bottom serif of the \P, F. Keep going.

Thanks for helping André

???

This is the draft for the light version:

The ear of the 'r' feels a little heavy to me, but otherwise I like this :-)

And what do you think, is the Light-Italic working?

Melior already exists, with the same construction.

Are you really sure ? I find these typefaces are different, especially in the italics.

It is good so far. But your suggestion is also valuable from my prospective to enhanced view.
Thanks
Dean Brabin

I didn't mean it was identical, but similar. I don't like Melior.

I find it pleasant. Especially the readability of the PDF, I guess because it was born to be FONT TEXT.
Can you tell what software was made?...
