I like the individual letter shapes, but it is difficult to see how they will work together in real text, based on the samples you have posted.

Can you post a paragraph or so of text in each weight? Since your typeface is intended for running text, this would help get a feel for the overall effect (legibility and personality).

I agree with Glyn, it'd be nice to take a look at a paragraph. As far as the shapes go, in the lowercase "a" you might consider shortening the upper left stroke, it's looking longer than the a's bowl (maybe it works when set in small size?). I really like the w and the ligatures of ch an qu.

Bueno, mi punto a tratar era sólo ese. Si eres anglohablante no le vas a ver uso a los caracteres pareados ya que los dígrafos son muy pocos en inglés, yo sólo conozco CH y SH, pues, si descontamos la cantidad de fonemas nuevos que se generan a partir de las vocales. En cambio, en español, hay CH, LL, RR, QU, GU y depronto SH y GN(para los ociosos que escriben lasagna y champagna). Es obvio que César creó esos caracteres enfocados a este idioma.

Exelente iniciativa de diseño. Me puedo dar cuenta que hay muchos detalles que resaltan o llaman la atención en su particularidad mas que en su conjunto. Cuidado por que los textos de lectura deben carecer de puntos distractivos que por muy cool que se vean individualmente, hacen de que la tipografía no sea versátil y para que hacer otra display si tienes material para "transparentar" lo que actualmente propones.

La g y la t, particularmente están en esta linea que diseñadores como Fontana proponen por defecto como parte de la familia "regular" lo que a mi parecer deberían ser caracteres alternativos pa uso decorativo..

Me parece inconsistente insistir en marcar la "diferencia" al presentar tipos como de texto cuando la novedad que contienen son estos caracteres que no aportan tan sutilmente como el resto de tus caracteres.

La curvas de las ascendentes me parecen interesantes, quizas debas presentar una busqueda mas generosa entre distintas exageraciones en estas hastas para poder sugerirte la mas versátil segun su integracion con las curvas de tu altura x y de tus descendentes.

It looks like a good start, but I would try to avoid the similarities with Fontana and Meta. I find the overall wide-ness interesting, it may work very well at small sizes, but then you would have to shorten the ascenders and descenders.

OK, Critique Thursday 2 (read about it here) hasn't officially begun yet, but since I'll be commuting for most of its brief two hours, I'd like to get my two cents in on this great design now:

I think that this is a great start on a design, but it needs some polish. Wide is certainly ok, but I think that some characters are too wide. The "m" for instance feels uncomfortable to me, but I love the "m"…

I also think that the boldest weights should be more narrow overall than they are. That would make them feel "right," a bit compacter, and a little more dark.

I would make the Demi weight slightly darker.
The "z" and "v" are leaning left (in a way that the "a" isn't).
The almost-join in the "k" is too sharp (out of character).

I wish we could see some set text. That is the only way you can see what happens when reading. Regarding the bent entrance strokes on the ascenders, in my experience with my own font, I found that there is a great deal of tweaking that has to be done after seeing small text. You don't have to finish the whole font first. Just set some quick metrics with what you have and output the font. Set some long text at various text sizes and see if what you have done is enough. It seems to me that you need to make the bend a bit more apparent.
I also think the demi weight is too weak.

Nice work though! Keep tinkering.

What do you think of reducing the number of letter who has the 2 inside/outside slant? I think this could help the readability our legibility in small and long text.

The stroke terminals seem to be giving an overall impression of backslant. Is it crazy to suggest tilting the whole forward by maybe one degree or so? Note that Syntax has a slant of 1/2 a degree, and Rialto has a slant of one.

Me encanta cuando la gente que sabe hace buenos comentarios, me siento como en esos programas de tv donde se juntan los directores técnicos de equipos y con comentaristas hablan de futbol avanzado.

En primer lugar, me encantaría estar de acuerdo con sergito, porque durante mucho tiempo me dediqué a buscar formas que fueran acorde a un sonido limpio, y que se grafica de manera compuesta. Pero no, en verdad no creo que sea la manera.
He visto un montón de experimentos frustrados de ligaduras que representan un nuevo sonido, sin embargo no he visto ninguno que resulte.

Ni la "Ch" de Fontana
La "ae" me carga hacerla, la hago sólo porque es obligación, al igual que la doble "s" alemana.
O sea, el problema de las ligaduras no sólo le afecta a los de habla hispana, sino que a casi todos los idiomas.

Claro está que puedes hacer ligaduras decorativas como las de "mrs. Eaves", y te quedan muy bien, pero el aporte en textos es demasiado distractivo.

Todo esto lo digo con mucha propiedad, ya que las letras compuestas para mi son las más horribles del alfabeto, digamos que la "m" y la "w" son las mas feas formas.

Ahora, si analizamos la "q+u" nos encontramos con una forma demasiado complicada y absolutamente antinatural, donde el importante espacio entre letras fue eliminado, y cuando uno mira el signo, este espacio se siente muy ausente. Si le sumamos a esto, que estamos compartiendo un asta no terminal con un trazo medio, hmmmm no sé, creo que no resultará bien y se sumará a los experimentos anteriormente mencionados.

Por otro lado, discrepo absolutamente con Eduardo, ya que la estructura de la letra es demasiado inestable para ser leída en cuerpos pequeños. Digamos que sería como leer una fuente normal pero en un camino empedrado. Sin mencionar a todo esto que conserva un poco de efecto pescado (http://typophile.com/node/6001)...

Sin embargo, creo que es una bella tipografía para ser usada en titulares. El tema de la corrección caracter por caracter, hmmmm, no se, prefiero no hacerlo ya que esta muy bien, y solo encuentro muy extraña la "t" y la "g".
Esa "t" la he visto antes y creo que no funciona bien, y la "g", creo que si la cerraras te quedaría maravillosa.

Suerte y felicitaciones, es un excelente trabajo.

PD: como me gustaría postear con el ejemplo a la vista como en el foro antiguo, y que me llegue un mail avisandome de que alguen ha respondido, para que no se me olvide este tema y no vuelva a leerlo nunca más...

(I am not a typographer, I just enjoy typography, please excuse me if my opinion is out of date/context.)

I've printed some of the samples you uploaded. I really like how it works in small sizes, it has a nice feeling into it.

Ive noticed that the lowercase z tends to look over-wavy and somehow unstable, this increases as the font weight does. I don't know if this is entirely intentional but it does look weird.
Also Ive noticed that some combinations of letters, like "ill" in "felíz cardillo y kiwi whatever", appear to be over the baseline, I dont know if this is a print error (I printed it twice to be sure) but it does look alike. My guess, the curves are over-compensed or however you say that. I think this is a general tendency in your tipography when seen in lectura or gallarda sizes, it looks baseline-wavy.

Also I think the height of the acute accented lowercase "i" (í) looks smaller than the regular "i". I'm not sure about the "qu" ligature/extra glyph, but for now I won't say anything against it ^^.

It is conceptually and in detailed view interesting, I think some details like the opened lowercase "g" will just blend in small sizes, but commonsense says there "shall" be a difference, I myself dont know, you'll have to try.

sobre mi ultimo comentario: el asunto de la linea base talvez este relacionado tambien con el angulo en el que las astas verticales terminan en la linea base, que al tener menos area, podrian segun creo, tener compensacion de manera similar a las curvas. no se si de hecho la tengan, solo se me ocurrio como una solucion. César. Muy bueno el trabajo, de todas formas le veo demasiadas similitudes con el diseño de Fontana, creo que eso le quita identidad, quizá la f con descendentes podría conservarse para la versión itálica.

La ligadura de la rr resulta en un híbrido que mezcla la n con la m, quizá en textos moleste.

Pienso que Fontana ha volvido a ser casi un "prototipo" para la entera escena de diseno tipografico sudamericano; ha visto muchas disenos en los ultimos anos que se inspiran fuertamente de Fontana. Es una cosa de orgullo para un disenador, y por eso puede ser que Ruben no se sientaria molestado acerca de Puertas Sans. Pero claro que hay que preguntarlo directamente.

La verdad que las correcciones indicadas en www.cesarpuertas.com/obliqua/ me parecieron muy buenas. Creo que de esa forma la tipografía gana en rítmo (no se hace tan zigzageante en texto, lo que a la larga terminaría cansando) y en personalidad.
Con respecto al paradigma Fontana, puede ser cierto, pero quizá sea demasiado pronto para indicarlo. Las grotescas son un ejemplo de cómo se pueden refinar tipografías. Las diferencias entre Helvetica y Univers son notorias sólo para personas con el ojo entrenado, de todas formas tienen un origen común en Akzidenz-Grotesk (1898).
Hoy en día estas tipografías son una categoría en sí mismas pero, ¿pasará igual con ND Fontana?

The last month or two have been important in terms of changes for Obliqua (aka Puertas Sans). I took all the feedback and redefined the proportions of every character as well as the overall shape of the letterforms. I think lots of improvements have been made. Cesar, sorry I haven't been able to follow the discussion, I only understand English and French.

I think that with a typeface like this, which competes in some well-occupied territory, the subtlety of detail and proportion is very important, to distinguish the face.

At the moment, the finish, or "polish" as Dan has termed it, is not decisive enough to reveal how well the proportions and fine shapes and joins work.

In particular, the curves of most characters are too rough. I don't believe this is a feature of the face, rather, it is a shortcoming which is obscuring the true nature of the letters you are trying to reveal.

The general shapes and proportions of the letters are fine -- they work well together! But the next step must be to refine the curves.

Un día, Rodrigo Ramirez bautizó todos efectitos innecesarios que practicamente ni se ven como "pilines". (curvitas misteriosas, serifs a medias, cortes en los trazos, etc)
Fue ese mismo día que revisó todas sus tipografías, le sacó todos los "pilines", y nos instó a que hiciéramos lo mismo.
Ese día, la tipografía en Chile empezó a tomar otra cara y comprendimos que los esfuerzos de diseño hay que entregarlos a la estructura de la letra y no al efecto.
En ese sentido, creo que a tu tipografía le falta mucha limpieza, enderezarle los trazos chuecos porque si, revisar comienzos y terminaciones, ¿serán necesarios?...
En un texto, no es bueno que la tipografía empiece a bailar. ¿En un titular si...?, a veces...
Voy a revisar un poco de material y trataré de que el siguiente tema de letritas hable del tema.

That is very, very nice. A huge change since the last PDF's. And for the better that is. I love the 'a' and 's' especially, and the subtle tails as terminals.

Is the crossbar on the f too high? Could it be a little lower?

It looks quite high, doesn't it? It must be because of the descender.

I just found a general proportion issue in Obliqua. It was corrected by stretching all the glyphs and their metrics 12%. What do you think?

When you do that sort of mechanical modification you have to then
go back and re-establish all your "norms", like stem thicknesses, etc.

Althought there's some strangeness in the rendering that I hope
is intentional, like the bottom-left of the counter of the "b" and
the bottom-right of the descender of the "f".

BTW, I actually prefer narrow fonts, but that's mostly
just me, and at least this way the fonts can be set smaller.

Muy buen trabajo con tu tipo, me gusta.
En la ultima version bold, hay problemas de espaciado entre caracteres.
La obliqua sans medium, tiene una a bold que se estrecha mucho, ademas el terminal del trazo superior se cae hacia adelante. Me gustaria que esa curva interna en la a fuera mas pronunciada en angulo, como en la contraforma de los serif que van hacia la izquierda, como en la n.

Me parece genial tu tipografía. En mi humilde opinión: un gran aporte a la tipografía latinoamericana.
Lo que sí, me da la impresión que la s y S bold están demasiado «cabezonas», creo que pierde estabilidad. Quizá ensanchando la parte inferior de la forma eso cambia (parece como si fuese una s girada 180º)

Hmm, in the last versions I miss the tails as terminals on the 'a' and 'd' etc.?
Why have you removed those? That was one of the features that made it special and lively in my opinion. Those made me like it so much...
You should seriously consider on bringing those back, or at least supply them as alternates!

Algo que pienso que podría mejorarse son las contraformas: fijate cómo parece más grande en la p y en la q que en la o. En la u parece más grande que la n (siempre conviene estrecharla un poco, es uno de esos inexplicables caprichos ópticos), el trazo terminal de la a yo lo bajaría para que equilibre la contraforma abierta de ese caracter con la e.

What about letting the top of the lower case a recede a little bit. When I see the ca and ra it starts to feel tight. The right sidebearing on the r is part of it. It seems too tight. Maybe if that is given some air I will be happier with the a! The left sidebearing on the t may be a little tight too. Nice stuff to be sure.

¿Ha pensado en volver a inclinar los signos de admiración, interrogación, comillas... como la Fontana ND? .

Las últimas muestras me encantan. Sobre todo la tilde, que en pequeños tamaños se realiza en la pantalla como una línea recta, pero más grande, se ve que sube ligeramente de izquierda a derecha.

English designers: César's tilde is exemplary. It has the feeling of rising slightly from left to right, but at small sizes is more like a macron, which besides being a good general guideline, perfectly fits with his goal of integrating handwriting features as that's how Spanish speakers tend to write.

I'm guessing that with "tilde" Matthew meant the acute accent (like in this "á").
In latin-american countries "tilde" signifies any line-like trace over a character, as described by the Spanish's Real Academy's Dictionary.
I've heard it referring to both the ~ in the "ñ" and the ´ in the spanish vowels; in daily language the second use is much more common.
