Typophile

Welcome back, Typophiles!

It's been a long, arduous road back, but we hope you're as excited as we are!

So what's the new Typophile all about?

First and foremost, all the archives have been preserved and we've even worked hard to ensure that URLs have remained as consistent as possible. You'll find old Forums content now grouped under an appropriate Community.

Typophile has all always been about community. It's the relationships and conversations we've built together over years that has made Typophile what it is, so we've decided to double down on community. To this end, we've done a few things.

Home. Optimized for mobile
We wanted to encourage quick and easy sharing, so we've built a status engine that gives you up to 329 characters (ahem, Latin 1 + 2 if you're curious) to share a thought, link, or picture. Snapping found type and posting from your phone just got really easy.

Got a few free moments? The new Typophile makes it even easier to scroll through updates and see what people are up to.

Goodbye Forums. Hello, Communities
We are declaring the message board format dead and welcome Communities in their place. Active topics across all communities rise to the surface, allowing you to graze and discover new communities that pop up.

Anyone can start a community! We hope that the new system encourages lots of meaningful groupings and activity.

Always Improving
Despite the unfortunate hiatus, our commitment to Typophile remains stronger than ever. To that end, if you encounter bugs or design glitches, check the known issues and add it in the comments.

Awesome! Consider me excited. Thanks for all the work you guys have put into this legendary place.

Hi Jared!

That's good news!! Thank you for bringing it back! :D

Just one thing I can't access the link "known issues" I get a "Access denied. You are not authorized to access this page." :(

Joël, I've fixed permissions to that page. Let me know if you can access it now. //j

Yes! Thank you ;-)

Forever grateful!

Great to see you back again!

Congratulations, Jared, and thanks for all the hard work! Welcome back.

I was really excited to find out that Typophile is online again. Congrats to everyone involved!

Is there a plan to support backwards compatibility for (old) links directing to specific threads/answers?

We've tried to keep all old links intact. Do you have an example?

Yay! I'm so happy I'm at a loss for words. For once. Give me time. ;)

How are "communities" different from the old different forums? And what platform are you using now? Drupal again or something else?

Congrats Jared and thank you for bring Typophile back.
[edited for typo]

After some (mis)trials of other platforms, we came full circle back to Drupal, which is a big reason why we've been able to preserve avatars, passwords, and URLs.

Communities are a lot like Forums, but open up some new possibilities, like hidden or members-only communities. I expect many communities will grow over time; much more than the original Forum architecture.

*tears of joy*

At last! Wonderful.

Nice to have the old girl back on her feet, or whatever metaphor you're supposed to use for website renewals.

Welcome Back! Like the new look! Cleaner and easier! Excellent work!

Thanks!

It's hard to express the gratitude I'm feeling. Thank you for returning the loyalty.

Does the same icon appear automatically from years ago?

Lots of old familiar faces! Thanks for coming back online. Where's the donate button? :)

Glad to be back!

How about rotating through the logos from the old logo competition to replace that "TPHL"?

Very glad to see you back – congratulations and thanks!

Wow. Back online! Was never the most active and certainly not the most talented member here but it's nice to see it back!

A piece of my life has returned, great news and thank you.

welcome back, I've learned so much from this place.

Hi everyone! I started reading Typophile when I was dabbling in graphic design in college; now I'm a professional designer and design teacher! We've come a long way.

This is exciting — happy to see Typophile is back! Congrats for the hard work.

I'm really so happy and excited that Typophile came back.

  1. Voting which may remove the need for repeating the same replies by simply upvoting those that one agrees with. Although this voting should have some more meaning related to it. Replies that have higher upvotes should become visually more prominent (not by changing replies order) compared to those that may even receive downvotes.
  2. And even though this site became very mobile friendly I don't like the non responsive approach because its usability on desktops is now very much hindered. It should at least limit it's content width. Nowadays designers having huge displays with huge resolutions makes this page lets just mildly put it unreadable.
  3. No support for markdown? These days many sites where users add formatted content use markdown instead of HTML tags. Markdown is so much simpler, a whole lot quicker to type and simple for server side processing. It would be great if you'd support MD formatting. If MD is not something you'd like to support then at least implement keyboard shortcuts for Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I etc. which would insert tags into types content either at caret position or around selection. This is a rather simple thing to do.
  4. Formatted preview can be enabled but it will only display what's been typed and won't auto update if one continues editing. Update button is also placed after content instead of below edit box.

About the keyboard shortcuts this code might help a bit. Very simple and does the trick pretty well...
$(function() {
    var keys = {
        b: "strong",
        i: "em",
        k: "code",
        open: function(tag) { return "<" + tag + ">"; },
        close: function(tag) { return "</" + tag + ">"; }
    };
    $("#message-input")
        .off("keyup")
        .on("keyup", function(evt) {
            if (!keys[evt.key] || !evt.ctrlKey) return;
            evt.preventDefault();
            var head = this.selectionStart;
            var tail = this.selectionEnd;
            var left = this.value.substr(0, this.selectionStart);
            var mid = this.value.substring(this.selectionStart, this.selectionEnd);
            var right = this.value.substr(this.selectionEnd);
            this.value = left + keys.open(keys[evt.key]) + mid + keys.close(keys[evt.key]) + right;
            var shift = keys[evt.key].length;
            this.selectionEnd = tail + shift + 2;
            this.selectionStart = head + shift + 2;
            $(this).trigger("input");
        });
});

Glad to see Typophile back! Thanks!

YAY! Thank you, Jared, for putting the effort into this revival!
I admire your audacity with the bold new format. The design appears to be optimized only for mobile, however. It doesn’t work so well for those of us with wide screens. Many images display so large you can’t see much of them at once, and text line lengths cause some readability issues. May I suggest a max width for the main column? When space allows, you can use it for another column that highlights interesting users, threads, and communities.

huzzah!

Thanks Stewf. Glad to see you here again! Yes, bold certainly was the goal. But the feedback is pretty consistent, so I imagine we'll have to address it.

Good news—thanks!

Well it seems that even though Typophile is finally back its lively community died in the meantime. :( Not much happening any more as it seems. I hope it'll pick up back to where it used to be. But this whole width content is really disturbing new UI usability. It's just unpractical and goes against every good typographic rule to have text blocks this wide...

I think many people remain eager to rejoin. But the current design is a turn-off. I hope it will get fixed, and then another announcement made.

I'm not enjoying the current design, and when I am navigating from the main page, what section different threads are in is not apparent to me.

I want the ability to completely suppress Type ID posts from showing to me, on the main page, after I log in.

Also, I strongly believe it would help to call it “Font ID” instead of “Type ID” and make the sub-fora more prominent than they are now.

The whole interface just feels too grey and low-contrast. I feel tired just navigating it and entering a few lines. It makes me want to take a coffee break, but not in the good way. :)

A suggestion about the Type/Font ID issue: pin a link first-up in the Topic list so that would be the first thing a requester sees, and put it in Bold, and larger might help too.

Like most others it won't hurt my feelings if I never see another Type ID request in the wrong place.

Maybe offer an option to filter out posts with sufficiently negative scores (the way most mis-placed Font ID requests wind up).

The whole interface just feels too grey and low-contrast. I feel tired just navigating it and entering a few lines.

Indeed. No-one is happier than me to see Typophile alive again, but the UI is just too confusing and the design, frankly, not very appealing. I am afraid this is what's keeping old users from coming back. I really hope there will be improvements.

What these people said.

As a specific example: I know the recent-ish attempt to revive the Type Battles only garnered a handful of entries, but I think the way to build THAT up would be to keep plugging away with more new challenges - now that SOME of us know the site is back up and running, we'd be able to share news of them with interested parties elsewhere. For example, I'm a member of an ambigrammists group on Facebook, and intend to let the people there know as soon as another battle appears (since they are into custom lettering and experimental type and whatnot, at least a couple would be likely to roll their sleeves up and have a go).

But the near-invisible aspects of the user interface at present ARE offputting.

So, um, I just want to say something so things keep being said, so OK.

I am enjoying the re-emergance of typophile after its long hiatus. Thank you! To get the people back: When joining we gave a contact email. Why not send out emails to all the old community members informing them that typophile is back? I am sure a clever programmer can come up with a script to automate that and avoid junk mail filters because of the mass mailing.

Also 'advertise' in other type fora inviting people to TPHL, perhaps after it has shed its funereal and elephantine house style? :)

Yes I am also excited! Very cool!
And besides I love the neat blog design. Awesome.

PS: Is there a way to get informed if someone comments personal blog entries and that I do not see?
But again, nice design! Thumbs up!

Me not. I do like the design in fact. I admit first time looking at it I thought by myself something similar, but now I like it. Specially the personal blog looks cool even if it may lack some functionality by now (sort or pin post to the front etc.)

Thanks for the design recommendations. The way I see it, Typophile is a living entity and can evolve. As words can only go so far, would you guys be interested in a new thread devoted to sharing design comps for an improved layout/experience?

That might get very messy. Maybe better to put up rough variant proposals and let people opine.

Please just increase the contrast throughout. I just don't need the eyestrain.

Hear, hear!
Or rather: See, see!
