Caption pairing for flourishy lettering

Eric Doctor0 votes

Hi folks,

I made this piece of lettering, and I need a typeface pairing for the captions. I've been using Bodoni MT Black for its rational construction and stroke contrast, but my boss thinks it's too high-contrast, and also wants me to try some lowercase.

Any suggestions? Note that this will be 21" wide.

Maybe something like Bookman for that 'victorian' feel?

One option would be to echo your Tuscan terminals in a restrained low contrast text typeface such as Zilvertype http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/zilvertype-pro/ or Erasmus http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/redrooster/erasmus-rr/

Or you could simply use a typeface that suggests reliability, integrity and stability, such as Clarendon Text https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/clarendon-text/
This would contrast with the swirly thoughts in the sky impression conveyed by your lettering.

Perhaps a retro-looking contrasted sans?

Folowwing up on Riccardo's suggestion "Perhaps a retro-looking contrasted sans?" you might consider Globe Gothic from circa 1900 Digitized https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/lanston/ltc-globe-gothic/

Thanks, donsho! I don't know how I skipped over Clarendon — somehow I tried Century and didn't make that jump to Clarendon.

Erasmus has a nice optimistic stoicism to it with the angled terminals.

Bookman always feels like the 70s to me, but maybe that's just the outsize influence of the ITC version.

Globe Gothic is a good thought, but I dunno, the digitized version looks so...digital.

Anyway, thanks for all the help, y'all! We're hoping to send this thing into production next week and you've helped me get there. Look for it soon in your local purveyor of smart, funny gifts for smart, funny people.
