Al Pacino "Serpico" (1973) typeface

chloec

This is the typeface cropped in for easy viewing but you can find the whole poster here (the face is only used for the title) https://pubbli.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/serpico_al_pacino.jpg

Any ideas what this rad typeface is?

Might not have been digitized. Some similar fonts: Gigalypse http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/dunwich/gigalypse/ Special Forces http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/typodermic/special-forces/

A little too wide, but otherwise rather close -- except for the squared corners on _C_ and _S_ and the leg on _R_ -- is YWFT Matter https://www.youworkforthem.com/font/T0264/ywft-matter?affid=109571
The font is a digital version of Information Extra Bold Wide (Breitfett) which was designed by Friedrich Karl Sallwey in 1958 as an addition to the Information family. It is probably best known today from its use in Pablo Ferro’s title sequence for “Bullitt”. [Source Stephen Coles https://www.flickr.com/photos/stewf/11794966995/in/photostream/ ]

Pretty convinced it has never been a font as it, rather a customization of an existing pre-digital sans.
Some I like as alternative: FF Softsoul Black (not bad, some corners needing to be squared and it'd be not so far), Sneakers (more work), Mansfield (nice too), Rika (hardly squooshed but why not), Iranica, Nima, Philosophy (almost perfect), LeftOvers II

A dozen suggestions, all in the ball park but unfortunately all are in the outfield. To attempt to duplicate the letters using an existing font could be more than a trivial amount of work, depending on how close a match was desired.
EDITED TO REMOVE GUESSWORK:
As for the question of whether this was a photo-lettering era creation rather than hand lettering, about all I can say is that the letters work well together and could make an effective font.

Great suggestions!

I'm not surprised that it has never been digitized although it does make some sense to think it was customised. Luckily it is more of an inspiration point than a reproduction so this has been very informative and helpful, thank you both!
