you would think the national body responsible for the promotion of the language would be aware of it

To be honest, John, I've stopped thinking about national bodies responsible for languages and nothing surprises me anymore. A few years ago a journalist from an Irish language newspaper went into the department of the Gaeltacht with a camera and took photos of all the spelling mistakes in the internal signage. Even non-Irish speakers were horrified. And more often than you would expect, there are fairly scary spelling mistakes in road signs.

Occasionally you come across unidentified, incomprehensible objects like this one in the West of Ireland:

weird

But what are you doing talking about Welsh and Irish when you could be answering a juicy question about Thai??? ;-)

Matha

I didn't realize this was going to be so thoroughly Google-proof when I posted it; and from the lack of responses, I'm thinking maybe another question should be posted to keep this thing going...

Nathan, we surrender. Give us another question, but please also let us know the answer to the Thai one.

Sorry about that. The answer is 1925 - my reference was A Century of Thai Graphic Design by Anek Nawikkamun. So, here's another (which I'm positive isn't impossible;-)

Identify the three foundries who used the following pin marks:

ps: I won't be online tomorrow, so I'll check back later tonight and early Monday morning. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Nathan, the filenames you've used for those images (which show up in the email version of your post, if not directly online) make this too easy... :-/

hhp

Oy vey. Didna realize those showed up in the email. I'll post something else in a sec. [embarrassed blushing]

Alright. Here goes. In a standard fount of Monotype Times New Roman, how many units wide are the bodies for lc 'm' and lc 'i'.

I give up, Nathan

m: 18
i: 9 (?)

You've got one right Letter.

Hmm. Did I kill the Pop Quiz? :-P

Hmmm, i saw a working monotype 2 weeks ago, but I didn't measure the i.
But if m = 18, than i should be 5 I suppose ( If I measure Times New Roman).
Don't worry Nathan, I think it was a fine question! :-)

Thanks Letter. I was starting to get self-conscious when I realized my obtuse questions had slowed down this thread for a whole week ;-)

Anyhow, you're extremely close.

if m=18, then i=6.

That's it! Thank God :-)

Alright, next question:

What does "AGFA" stands for?
Bonus question: in 1989, what 3 companies merged to create Agfa Corporation?

Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation

Agfa was originally an acronym for Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation. In 1989, Agfa-Gevaert Inc (1964) merged with Compugraphic and Matrix. [Note that Agfa-Gevaert Inc is not be be confused with the Agfa-Gevaert Group, which is the parent company that owns all the others.]

That was a close one
Sorry John.

Rats, Matha beat me to it by a minute! That'll teach me note to waste time checking my sources.

Or to waste time going for the bonus question - a valiant effort nonetheless!
And who would've thunk an Irishman would have a quick trigger finger? :-)

BTW, what's really interesting is that you guys are 10 time zones apart!

hhp

Considering the cross-post, and the fact that John answered my bonus question, I declare him the winner. Sorry, Matha. ;-)

Btw, just checking, the Agfa-Monotype own website says "Akteingesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation", not
"Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation".

...who would've thunk an Irishman would have a quick trigger finger? :-)

I watched a lot of Sergio Leone films.

...what's really interesting is that you guys are 10 time zones apart!

One of us doesn't get much sleep though.

Matha

Considering the cross-post, and the fact that John answered my bonus question, I declare him the winner. Sorry, Matha. ;-)

Hold on a second!!! My trigger finger's gettin all itchy!!

>Or to waste time going for the bonus question - a valiant effort nonetheless!

Hey! ;-)

Btw, do you work for Agfa, Hrant?

No, but I love their film and their pre-press stuff. It's a darn shame they no longer sell scanners.

hhp

Thanks, Clint. ;-)
I'm going offline now, and I'm keeping my decision.

Have a good night, typophiles!

I'm going offline now, and I'm keeping my decision.

I'm too tired to think of a question anyway (and I'm certainly not waiting until 1 o'clock in the morning to post one) so I'll back down gracefully and stow my 6-shooters under my pillow.

Fire away John ;-)

O

double post (keeping me from my lovely bed for another 2 minutes)

Goodnight

I say Matha wins

clint

and I should know
