(Condensed?) French book serif font

seanos

This is from an 1878 edition of Le tour de France par deux enfants. I’ve had a go at identifying it, but without a definite result. I haven’t seen any font that has a baseline J and the same Q...and then there’s the ?

Maybe this will be obvious to a more practised eye.

Don't have my refs at hand so this is from memory. Q looks similar to one of the Didots. So would be worthwhile checking them for matches. Not a lot of digital versions of condensed Didots. Perhaps in an old specimen book?

Looking at the Encyclopedia of Typefaces by Jaspert, Berry and Johnson it is close to french Round Face by Monotype and Serie No. 16 by Deberny & Peignot, but these are later I think, and less condensed.

I suspect you would find a match in a pre 1900 D&P specimen book. Unfortunately none online to my recollection.

I have a font called Industrial736 from Bitstream that is very similar to this. Here is also another called Dubiel that you can download for free.
