Film Noir? (Type Suggestion Request)

Arild Kumar Fylling0 votes

Hey!

First I’ve got to say that yes, I am a complete typography-n00b, and I will probably taint this forum with my stupidness. :D

Anyways, I have a poster that I’m working on that consists of vector art and is kind of Film Noir’ish in style, so I’m basicly just wondering if the gurus of type could make some suggestions when it comes to the choice of font? (Preferably free…)

Thanks in advance. :D

Not really… Well, if you could point me in the direction of a font that looks kind of Noir’ish in style, without looking cheezy… I know it’s a vague description, but it is all I’ve got.

The thing is I’m not sure how a typical Noir-font would look. I’ve done some research, but I wasn’t able to determine what could be considered as Noir’ish since what I found was so diverse.

So any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Reporter 2 is the first typeface I think of when I think of noir …
Pulp Fiction, the movie, used Reporter 2 in some of its
marketing efforts …wow, that was like 10 years ago …

Arild,

New Global, Lunda Modern, Oxtail or Graficz might fit your purposes? Have a look yourself at: http://www.macrhino.com

Wow!
Thank you so much for all your suggestions! I will give them a try. :D

I've used Neutraface, Whitney, and FF DIN on this film noir motion graphics piece. Here's the links to the font families:

Same here, I've been looking for a "Noirish" font for a while, to go with my upcoming brand for women (I'm a fashion Designer). I'm really looking for a font that will evoke the spirit of the Femme Fatales of the film noir style, something "Pop" something Retro, but still authentically Noir...I would even go so far as to say something along the lines of "B" vampire movie styles...lol I've looked at some of the suggestions but they seem to be lacking a little devilishness...if any typofiles have any suggestions please pass them my way.

How about House's Monster Fonts set?

Another good choice would be ALL CAPS in Futura SB Bold Italic. Lots of mid-century B-movie titles used italic/oblique grotesques. Add an offset shadow and distortion and you're good to go...

Arild, do you have anything specific in mind?

Agency Gothic from Font Bureau always reminds me of that era.

Please show us some examples of imagery you love from that era.
