I'm looking for a free alternative to Univers that I can use in a design class for non-designers. It obviously need not be perfect, but somewhat similar and in a couple of weights. Your professional advice is highly appreciated!

Free alternative to Univers
Try something like Open Sans, or Source Sans, which can be downloaded at Google Webfonts.
FreeUniversal -- SIL Sophia, modded to resemble Univers.
UniversElse -- A Univers clone resembling old, wobbly photocomp.
U001 -- In the Ghostscript 80-font packs.
